Why did my house window shatter?

My bedroom has a double pane window, I heard cracking noise last night, but didn't check into it. Today I opened the door and heard gl shatter, so I checked the window and the inside pane has a big hole, like someone threw a rock at it. I didn't understand how this could happen because nothing was thrown at the window. Anyone know why this would happen??
